Where's Pergo?
Most laminate
flooring you see in stores these days is not Pergo®.
Pergo® was the first laminate product introduced in the
United States in 1994 and it caught on like wildfire. Using
the word "Pergo" for all of laminates is like saying
"Kleenex" for all facial tissue and "Formica"
for kitchen counter tops. It's the name we all learned first
and it stuck. There are some 40+ manufacturers of laminate
floors now. Some flooring stores keep their Pergo® displays
just because of name familiarity but actually do not recommend
the brand because the color choices are fewer, the warranties
are not as strong as other manufacturers and it is expensive.
Did you know that one reason laminate flooring it is so popular
in Europe is because when apartment dwellers move from place
to place they can actually pick up the floor and take it with
them?
In 2007
Pfleiderer AG, a German supplier of wood paneling, agreed to buy Swedish flooring maker Pergo to boost U.S. sales and enter the European laminate-flooring market. (more)
