On, Wisconsin!

CarpetsPlus of Wisconsin is a family-owned and operated business dedicated to providing the right floorcovering at the right price to all of our friends and neighbors. The company operates four stores: two in Madison, one in Janesville and one in Plover.

Ray and Michael Peters started the family business as Madison Carpetland USA  in 1971. We had faith in the idea that, if we provided only quality products and treated our customers fairly at all times, we’d be able to provide a service to the community and support our family in the process. That’s proven to be true over the years, and the family remains an active part of the business today.

We changed our name to CarpetsPlus of Wisconsin/ColorTile in 1997 as we had added product lines to our inventory and additional locations beyond Madison. Today, we have every imaginable carpet plus many colors and styles of vinyl flooring, tile, hardwood, area rugs, stone, luxury vinyl and laminate flooring in stock every day. There are more than 40 of us working to help customers these days from Lake Geneva to Lake Superior.

All of our stores adhere to a no-pressure sales philosophy. Our goal is to help every customer find the perfect floor. We know that means finding the floor that will look great, handle the job at hand and last as long as needed, all for the best price possible. We call it the perfect flooring value. It’s that simple.

Whether you’re “just looking” or need the perfect solution fast, be sure to stop by. We’re here to help and you’re always welcome!

What our customers are saying

I’m happy with the carpet, tile and installation. Thanks for your help!

What our customers are saying

The tile is BEAUTIFUL! ABSOULTELY PERFECT, we all love it! It’s so amazing because it picks up the color of the wall….you will really like it I think and the pattern that Jeff used is great!! We are so pleased….THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! There was one tile that we felt stuck up a bit and he redid it and I know there was way more prep work than I think he expected… really excellent care. Please make sure to let Jeff know just how great he was! He cleaned EVERYTHING and just really couldn’t have asked for more. Really, the tile is perfect!

What our customers are saying

In all of our dealings with Mark Sellnow, customer service was great and he was extremely helpful. From our purchasing our first carpet and then dealing with and helping us when we found problems, he was always very pleasant, took our concerns seriously, and with his help we were able to get the carpet replaced. We can't thank him enough and will recommend him to anyone who is looking to purchase flooring. The two young men, Adam Wolfe and Junior McDonugh, that were sent to move our furniture, remove the old, and lay the new carpeting did an awesome job. They were both great with customer service, respectful and friendly. We were confined to a small area of our house while they carpeted three rooms and a hallway but the time was pleasantly spent because they were both so nice, like guests we invited to our home because we enjoyed their company. Adam did a very professional job from start to finish. It is evident that he takes pride in his work. Our thanks to both of them for a job well done.

What our customers are saying

Excellent job by the installation crew!! We love the "New Look".

What our customers are saying

Dissatisfied with our carpet installer and retailer, we were on the hunt for a good reliable company to replace them. I wanted reasonably priced flooring products and excellent installation. I was familiar with Carpets Plus and knew they had a good reputation but had not thought of them for our commercial use until a friend recommended them. Within one phone call, Cibi Perez came right out to my complex with measuring tape and many samples in hand. I had a range of product options for vinyl and carpeting and he took our apartment layouts and accurately drew out the measurements to give me a quote. On October 18, 2013, we had our first installation. Cibi sent out his wonderful crew of installers headed up by John. I believe that you can have the best product in the world but if the installers don't do it right, it won't make a difference. John and his crew blew me away with their professionalism. Our tenants love the new flooring and I'm proud to show our apartments to potential renters. I need to make a good first impression and Carpets Plus helps me do that. When we have turnovers, Cibi quickly responds and sets up the installations so I don't have to worry about meeting my deadlines. He communicates by e-mail and by phone as needed and will resolve any issues that come up. I'm so happy that I made the change to Carpets Plus. They go above and beyond in their customer service. We look forward to many years of business with Carpets Plus. I would highly recommend them for your complex too. Sincerely, Linda Weittenhiller Property Manager Sunwood Apartments

What our customers are saying

I'm pleased with the improvement in my home (K-Tech KT031 resilient flooring) and will keep you in mind when we replace the carpet.

What our customers are saying

I wanted to let you know how thrilled I am with the new hardwood floors. The Brazilian Cherry is spectacular! The reactions from visitors are pretty much the same: the jaw drops, followed by a "Wow! Your floors are soooo beautiful!" This is followed by a lot of raves that include "rich, warm, cozy, I would never leave my home again, etc." I can't thank you enough for helping me make my home the home of my dreams!

What our customers are saying

I would like to just thank all of you for the help with the basement. I know towards the end with the shower leaking you all were working hard to keep the project rolling. We thank you for that. The basement and shower turned out better than we expected and a lot of that was due to your help in picking the right tile and carpet. Thanks again for the hard work and installers quality of work as well.

What our customers are saying

We just wanted to say that we absolutely love our wood floor and tile! Don did an amazing job. We will send over some pictures once we have everything cleaned up. Thanks so much for your help with this!

What our customers are saying

Our new flooring in our basement is fabulous. The two men that put it in really worked hard and put in a very long day. I appreciate the nice service you gave us and will return again when something wears out here. Thanks again - this is about the third time we have come to CarpetsPlus (Madison) for your help.

What our customers are saying

I can honestly say I've never owed so many thanks to so many people...and I never thought our house could look as good as it does now. "Asking for help doesn't mean you failed, it just means you're not in it alone" Mike, thank you for your care and advice in our flooring choice. You helped us a lot! We really appreciate it.

What our customers are saying

Today my carpet was installed, beautiful carpet and very professional installers. Thank you!

What our customers are saying

The installers just left and I couldn't wait to write and tell you how much I LOVE the carpet! It's always hard to tell from a small swatch how it will look in the house, but I'm absolutely thrilled. The new pad is great - just like you said, that's what makes it feel so luxurious. Jim said the old carpet wasn't too bad, but the pad was cheap and that's what makes all the difference. I can't believe the difference! Thanks again for all your help getting this done for us by Thanksgiving. I will give Carpets Plus and YOU an A+ for customer service! Now let's just hope no one spills on it on Thanksgiving. smile

What our customers are saying

Thank you for your generous donation of providing carpet tile to finish off the hallway leading to the boutique. We couldn't believe it when Rick showed up with the carpet. I still smile when I think about it.

What our customers are saying

Just want to let everyone know how happy I am with my experience of buying and installing my new hardwood floors. Everyone was so very patient with me (I know I take awhile when making a decision!). Everyone was so helpful. The salesman was great educating me on my different options from laminate to engineered wood to solid hardwood. Yet he was never pushy. When I finally decided on the solid hardwood hard maple, he walked me through every step. The two men whom did the installation were incredible, very pleasant and did an awesome job. The man whom delivered my wood was very helpful, moving some furniture for me. Now that the floors are in, I can't describe how happy I am. Everyone that comes over comments on how beautiful my floors are and what a good installation job was done. Thank you! I will definitely recommend you to my neighbors and I will most definitely be a returning customer.

What our customers are saying

A few months ago Mike paid a visit to our home due to some staining of our flooring caused by previous installation from CarpetsPlus almost 6 years ago. Mike was quick to assure us that the problem would be resolved at no cost to us. A few weeks later his call came in to set up the install date. The two guys arrived on time and worked diligently to tear up and replace our floor with the audience of two of our children. A few days later a follow up call came in from Mike (and we forgot to call back - sorry!). We just wanted to tell you how much we truly appreciated working with your company. The process was smooth; the men were forthcoming and kind. To top it off, we have four young children, and each of the guys involved in this process took a moment to answer their questions as well as ours and pay them a moment of attention. We definitely will be happy to pass along your name when anyone is looking for referral and for our future needs. Thanks so much for your excellent customer service and installation!

What our customers are saying

Had our carpet installed this morning, looks great! Just wanted to thank Doug and his partner. They were excellent and very nice to my kids. Great experience!

What our customers are saying

Thank you for great service and professionalism. I look forward to coming back and dealing with your people!

What our customers are saying

Thank you again for standing behind our wood floor. It's so great to step down on the floor and not feel all that sponginess! Turned out really nice.

What our customers are saying

Thank you for all you have done to help make our home beautiful! We greatly appreciated your ability of coordinating (flooring) selections to make everything flow together perfectly! Thanks again.

What our customers are saying

“Joe and his Team worked hard and did an AWESOME JOB!! They were experts in installing Our floors! We LOVE the tile, color and the guys paid special attention to EVERY detail, remember I was very fussy about, and concerned about the edging and bridging rooms together!!! They went above and beyond!!!! Once again, our floors LOOK AWESOME!!!!!!! You have always been our shop of choice, and always will be! I'm bragging to everyone about you!!!!! Please be sure and tell them, once again for us, what a fantastic job they did, they worked hard!!!!”

What our customers are saying

Very satisfied with the job workmanship the installer did with our steps. Thanks.

What our customers are saying

Just a note to let you know that I love, love, LOVE my new flooring. And the installation team was amazing!!! They work together like a well oiled machine.... very efficient, courteous, helpful,... the list goes on. I was totally impressed they finished the job in one day!!! Thank you for using them and all of your assistance.

What our customers are saying

We appreciate the wonderful work your company displays. After being in business for 30 years it means a great deal to us to see someone who cares about the quality of service.

What our customers are saying

Thank you very much for the the boxes of floor tiles. We sincerely appreciate your donation and value your outstanding customer service. We look forward to our continued work with you.

What our customers are saying

Thank you very much for your help with our upstairs carpets, they look so much better now!

What our customers are saying

Thank you for your service. Marilyn will be in to look for area rugs next!

What our customers are saying

I wanted to say how much I appreciate Ken working with me on the issues with the Shaw carpet I had. Your installers were absolutely fantastic and an absolute pleasure to work with. The job they did on the patch piece in the basement is literally invisible. There is no way you can even see there is a patch in that location, and that is saying a lot considering how picky my wife is. Once again, thank you for working with us on this and I will definitely be more than happy to tell everyone I know who wants to purchase flooring to buy from Carpets Plus!

What our customers are saying

Thanks for doing a beautiful job with the carpet. You do excellent work!

What our customers are saying

"Mr. Peters, Please accept my sincere gratitude for some rather extensive home floor work recently carried out by your company. Of particular note were the two core-tec & kitchen floor installers. For the five days that we had them, the two guys were absolutely superb. They showed up on time, got to work immediately, and then, like all expert craftsmen, knew exactly what had to be done and then did it. After opening the garage door for them at 7:00 am each morning, my wife and I just got out of their way and let the two men do their magic. Let me also add that your salesperson was instrumental in closing the two separate deals with CarpetsPlus. As a salesperson, he possessed the perfect blend of in-house product knowledge, customer need satisfaction selling skills, and the affable personality needed to deal with a wide range of individual homeowner tastes. I’ll close by saying that the only thing your salesperson and installers lack are capes. They are that good. They are “get it done right” sorts of guys. Cordially, Patrick F. Gould"

What our customers are saying

"I recently purchased carpet and kitchen flooring from the Carpets Plus store in Janesville, WI. I had water damage in my home and was forced to replace my carpet and my flooring. After visiting "every" carpet store in Janesville I went to the Carpets Plus store on Pontiac Drive. It was greeted warmly and friendly as I entered and given professional help. Your salesman was patient and helpful. It took me many more visits before I was able to make my decision. I was not rushed and each time your salesman was patient and helpful. I would like to compliment you on hiring the professional help, this includes the kitchen installers, carpet installers, and gentleman who measured and salesman. Your staff were professional, friendly, arrived at the appointed time and were competent. I really do appreciate that as they were in my home for several days."

What our customers are saying

This is the second time I have worked with Aaron Karnatz. I can't say enough good things about him. His customer service and willingness to go above and beyond is the main reason why I keep coming back to carpets plus and not purchase from a big box store. His work ethic and customer service is very hard to find!

What our customers are saying

Thank you for the great service & installation of the plush carpet in our family room area. Its perfect!

What our customers are saying

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone at CarpetsPlus for helping me over the past year. All the rooms in my home have been re-done and they look awesome! Your staff is so warm and friendly and every time I have come into your store you have made me feel at home. I will definitely recommend you to anyone who is ever in need of new flooring. You guys can't be beat.

What our customers are saying

August 2015, Initial Meeting We went in on an afternoon to Carpets Plus West Side & met with Jeff. We are building a house, and neither one of us knows much about flooring....we just know that we want wood here, carpet here, tile in the bathroom, etc. We came with our total budget for flooring, master shower and installation & talked for just a couple minutes with Jeff about our style and what we were thinking. The rest of the process was easy & fun! We were guided to flooring that would keep us in our budget, and as he could see what our style is like, he was able to guide us in the right direction. We picked our hardwood, mud room, carpet & all the bathrooms/shower in a little over an hour and are really happy with our choices.

What our customers are saying

Thank you very much for the great job you did on installing the flooring in our new Chalet. We're very pleased with all of the carpet and vinyl flooring. It looks beautiful and we're very happy with it. If we have flooring needs in the future, we'll know who to call. We would definitely recommend your store and your professional workmanship to others.

What our customers are saying

I would like to thank you for your excellent service. We have always used you because of the wonderful people you have working for you. Wayne is very helpful and professional and Steve went out of his way to help me decide what pattern. Thanks!

What our customers are saying

Thank you for all you've done for us. I know how difficult we can be. The house looks wonderful. We couldn't have done it without your help!

What our customers are saying

Isthmus Publishing had a rather difficult two-floor carpet installation project. The installers showed up on time and had a professional, yet fun demeanor and they were extremely efficient in their work. I was surprised by the lack of dust created by pulling the existing carpet; they really knew how to minimize a mess. In addition, they coordinated their work to accommodate the movers, who removed and then re-installed desk units as existing carpet was pulled and new carpet installed. They worked diligently and with such speed that they eliminated days of work. I can't say enough about the professional attention we received. I will highly recommend CarpetsPlus of Wisconsin to my colleagues and friends.

What our customers are saying

Thanks for the great carpet! It has given our office a whole new "very professional" look! It has been great working with you and when I get ready to start replacing the carpet in my house we will be in.

What our customers are saying

I attended The Joey Trzebiatowski Memorial Golf Outing, and I want to thank you for your donation of a round rug. It's very beautiful in my home. I will be needing carpeting soon and will think of you first. Thank you!

What our customers are saying

We appreciate all you have done so far to keep this project moving forward. I look forward to continuing our relationship into the future.

What our customers are saying

I recently purchased carpet and kitchen flooring from the Carpets Plus store in Janesville, WI. I had water damage in my home and was forced to replace my carpet and flooring. After visiting "every" carpet store in Janesville I went to your store on Pontiac Dr. I was greeted warmly and friendly as I entered and given professional kelp. Jace was my salesman who was patient and helpful. It took me many visits before I was able to make my decision, I was not rushed and each time Jace was patent and helpful. I would like to compliment you on hiring the professional help, this includes the kitchen installers, carpet installers, gentleman who measured and salesman. Kitchen Installers were: Steven and Mike. Carpet Installers were: Doug and Terry. Room Measurer: Terry Salesman: Jace They were helpful, professional, friendly, arrived at the appointed time and competent, I really do appreciate that as they were in my home for several days. Thank you!

What our customers are saying

I came into the store and was immediately greeted by Jim Lilyquist who was able to understand my needs and helped me select the appropriate and quality carpet. They took the time to personalize the project and go the extra mile. They identified ways to help take extra steps to not just get the job done quickly, but excellently too. My entire experience was beyond any expectation I may have had. I would recommend using CarpetsPlus without any hesitation.

What our customers are saying

To all the guys at Color Tile - You're the best! Did another excellent job!! So professional! And I'm fussy! PS. I want one of those color tile t-shirts you had on.

What our customers are saying

The tile looks great! You did an excellent job helping us pick out the right colors and the installers did a SUPER JOB! Thanks for all your help.

Then our factory trained and certified installers will turn broadloom, hardwood and porcelain materials into beautiful floors.

Carpets Plus/ColorTile installers are available to deliver and install floors in Green, Rock, and Walworth Counties to the South, clear up to Snowmobile Country in the Vilas and Oneida Regions to the North. Laminate Floor Care

Laminate flooring is virtually maintenance-free. Routine cleaning requires you only to vacuum, use a dust mop, or a slightly damp (not wet) mop and dry with a clean, white cotton cloth.

Vacuum Regularly - vacuum using a soft bristle brush attachment. Avoid vacuum attachments with ‘beater bars’, which could damage your floor. A dry dust mop is also good to use instead of a vaccum. Place long bristle welcome mats placed at all outside entrances for people to wipe their feet on before walking on your floors.

Light Damp Mop - most laminate floors may be lightly damped mopped when needed. Avoid standing water as this may cause the seams between the planks to peak. Many manufacturers have a cleaning product such as Quick Step's Quick Clean

Use the Proper Chair Glides - Narrow wheels, sharp wooden legs or metal furniture legs can scratch your floors. Any furniture that rests directly on top of a laminate floor should have floor protectors, or wide furniture coasters under all feet.

Don't Use Oil Soaps - There are many over the counter oil-based soaps that when used for cleaning your floor that will leave a dull finish on your floor. Do not use soap-based detergents, oil soaps, or one-step clean and shine type products. A good rule of thumb is not to use any product that squirts liquid directly on the floor.

Trim Pet's Claws Regularly - Even though laminate floors are durable, pet's claws may scratch the surface if they are not trimmed regularly.

Never Wax a Laminate Floor - laminate floors have a very dense surface and floor waxes will not stick to the surface.

Wipe Spills Immediately - when liquids get spilled on your laminate floor use a slightly damp white cloth, or paper towel to immediately blot up and dry the effected area. For more difficult spots, follow the manufacturer's recommended cleaning procedures.

Follow the manufacturer's recommendations - the best suggestion is to only use the manufacturers recommended cleaning products on your floor.

Carpet Care Guidelines

The best way to ensure long–lasting beauty, comfort and durability in your carpet is to vacuum it regularly, as it prevents soil from becoming embedded in the carpet’s pile. Depending on the type of carpet you have, you’ll want to use a vacuum with a rotating brush, a beater bar or suction only.
When vacuuming high pile or premium soft carpets look for the following features that will allow you to easily maintain your carpet:

  • Adjustable Height – Use the highest setting where appropriate
  • Efficient Airflow – Avoid vacuums with very concentrated or sealed suction
  • Large Wheels allow the appliance to glide easily across the carpet

Consider professional cleaning every 12–18 months, depending on traffic and other use factors, frequency of vacuuming and whether the carpet is a light or dark color.

Use scissors to clip sprouts and snags; do not pull them or you may damage the carpet.
To remove a dent caused by heavy furniture, stroke carpet with the edges of a coin. You can also use a hair dryer or a steam iron to gently raise the dented area while you tug upward on the tufts. CAUTION: DO NOT LET THE IRON TOUCH THE CARPET.

If your carpet is burned, remove the tops of the dark, burnt fibers with curved fingernail scissors. If the burn is extensive, the carpet may require patching or replacement.

If a flooding occurs from a burst pipe, washing machine overflow or other leak, the carpet needs to be dried, front and back, by a professional cleaner with the proper equipment.

Ceramic Tile Floor Care

Although glazed ceramic tile requires less floor care than most of the other flooring types, there are things you need to do to maintain the beauty of the ceramic tile floor.

Wash Regularly - Wash the floor regularly to remove any dirt or grit. Use a mild, diluted detergent solution, such as Mr. Clean or Spic & Span. If in doubt, call us to get the tile manufacturer's cleaning recommendations.

Vacuum Regularly - Sweep, or vacuum your glazed tile regularly.

Avoid Ammonia-based Cleaners - ammonia-based cleaners may discolor some types of colored grout.

Always Rinse - After washing with a mild detergent you should thoroughly rinse the floor with clean, warm water.

Never Wax a Tile - The glazed ceramic finish should never be waxed.

Wipe Spills Immediately - If some liquids gets spilled on the floor you may use an all-purpose cleaner like Fantastic, or Top Job to clean up the effected area. This will help the grout joints from becoming discolored from spills (Non-epoxy grout joints should be treated with a silicone sealer twice a year to ensure stain protection.)

Vinyl Floor Care

Sweep your vinyl floor regularly (at least once a week).

Wipe up spills immediately to help prevent stains. The longer a stain sits the tougher it will be to remove from the surface.

Do not use soap or detergent products; they will leave a dull film.

When cleaning your floors, proper cleaner must be used to protect your warranty. Each manufacturer recommends that a no rinse cleaner be used for best results. Please see your sales associate for the proper guide for your floor.

To prevent dirt build up occasionally mop your floor with the manufacturer's recommended floor cleaner. Follow the instructions on the bottle and do not over mix or your cleaning solution may leave a dulling film.

Although the no-rinse cleaners do not need rinsing when you mop, rinsing will provide the better shine. If you do notice a dulling film after cleaning the floor, try a thorough rinse with warm, clean water.

Whenever possible place a non-staining doormat outside each entrance to your home to prevent dirt, sand, grit, and other substances such as oil, asphalt, and driveway sealer from being tracked onto your floor.

Do not use latex-backed, rubber-backed or coco-fiber mats on your vinyl floor.

Vinyl manufacturers recommend the use of latex-based driveway sealers to minimize the potential staining from asphalt sealer tracking.

To avoid sunlight causing your floor to fade or discolor you should always close your curtains or blinds where extreme sunlight hits the floor.

Replace all narrow furniture rests with wide-bearing ones. Support furniture with wide-bearing, non-staining floor protectors. It is recommended that all furniture protectors be at least one inch in diameter, made of non-pigmented, hard plastic, and rest flat on the floor. Non-staining felt protectors are also acceptable. Casters with a minimum 3/4" flat surface width or floor protectors are recommended for all moveable furniture. Metal floor protectors are generally not recommended.

Always use strips of 1/4" plywood or sheets of underlayment as runways to protect the floor if you need to move heavy objects, such as your refrigerator, across your vinyl floor. Runways should always be used even with furniture dollies, or even if the heavy objects are equipped with wheels or rollers.

To restore the hi-gloss on a urethane vinyl floor most manufacturers do recommend the use of a polish. Do not use paste wax and do not try to buff a urethane vinyl floor. Be sure the floor is thoroughly clean and completely dry before applying the manufacturer's recommended floor polish. (If all the dirt is not removed prior to applying the polish the dirt will become trapped underneath.)

Some of the newer vinyl floors have a low-gloss finish and the use of a floor polish may make the floor shiny.

It may be necessary after several applications of polish to strip the entire floor and reapply a new coat of polish. This may also be necessary for excessive dirt and grime build-up. Use the manufacturer's recommended recommend heavy-duty floor cleaner and stripper product. Once the floor is thorough cleaned, rinse, dry, and then apply a new coat of polish. High traffic areas may require more than one application of polish. Allow polish to dry "tack-free" between coats.

Cork Floor Care

Wipe Spills Immediately - when accidents happen and some liquid gets spilled on your cork floor, you should use a slightly damp white cloth, or paper towel to immediately clean up and dry the effected area. For more difficult spots, follow the manufacturer's recommended cleaning procedures.

Sweep or Vacuum Regularly (no beater bar) - Small stones, mud and gritty dirt tracked in from outside can play havoc on the cork floors finish. To help combat this use long bristle welcome mats placed at all outside entrances for people to wipe their feet on before entering onto the floors. Also, vacuum using a soft bristle brush attachment.

Vacuums with beater bar or power rotary brush head can damage a cork floor and never should be used.

Use the Proper Chair Glides - Narrow wheels, sharp wooden legs or metal furniture legs can scratch and dent cork floors. Any furniture that rests directly on top of a cork floor should have felt protectors, or furniture coasters under all it's feet. For extremely heavy objects such as a piano, use wide, non-staining rubber cups. Purchasing floor protectors is cheap insurance for protecting your cork floor investment. Weight distribution is a key factor in preventing indentation. Dents will recover in time as long as the cellular structure of the cork has not been broken.

Protect from Direct Sunlight - your cork floor may yellow when fading. The sun's UV rays accelerates the oxidation and aging of cork so periodically rearranging your furniture and closing the curtains during intense periods of sunlight can help avoid the problem.

Don't Use Oil Soaps - There are many over the counter oil-based soaps and wax based cleaning products that may damage or dull the finish of your cork floor. The best suggestion is to only use the manufacturers recommended cleaning products on your cork flooring.

In the kitchen, use a rug in front of the working areas, such as the stove and sink, to prevent local premature wear. Do not use throw rugs with rubber or vinyl backing without checking to determine if they will affect your floor's finish. Some materials in the backing can react with certain floor finishes, discoloring or causing the finish to become dull.

Never use tape or other adhesive products on this surface.

Periodically check floor for signs of wear. When visible, recoating becomes necessary to
prevent damages to the cork surface.

Trim Pet's Claws - Pet's claws may scratch you floors finish. Regularly trim dog's claws to help reduce scratching your floor's finish.

Protect when moving - Protect your floor with 1/4" piece of plywood or Masonite when using a dolly for moving furniture or appliances. Never slide or roll heavy furniture or appliances across the floor.

Bamboo Floor Care

Care for your Bamboo floor similarly to Hardwood

Don't Damp Mop - Water and bamboo floors don't mix! Water may cause your floor to swell and cup. Use only the manufacturer's recommended cleaning products on your bamboo floor. Apply bamboo surface cleaner directly to the mop instead of the floor. When mop or cloth becomes soiled replace it with a clean one. Terry cloth mops are good for this purpose, the covers are re-useable, so wash and dry the covers periodically or use soft towels.

Hardwood Floor Care

Understanding the characteristics of hardwood, as well as proper care and maintenance, will ensure that your new hardwood floor will provide many years of enjoyment.

Don't Damp Mop
Water and wood floors don't mix!  Avoid oil or water based cleaners. They can build up and create a cloudy haze to your floor. Instead, neutral pH cleaners made specifically for wood floors are recommended.  We can to advise you of what the wood manufacturer recommends for proper maintenance. Use only the manufacturer's recommended cleaning products on your hardwood floor.

Apply hardwood surface cleaner directly to the mop instead of the floor. When mop or cloth becomes soiled replace it with a clean one. Terry cloth mops are good for this purpose, the covers are re-useable, so wash and dry the covers periodically or use soft towels.

Wipe Spills Immediately - when accidents happen and some liquid gets spilled on your hardwood floor, you should use a slightly damp white cloth, or paper towel to immediately clean up and dry the effected area. For more difficult spots, follow the manufacturer's recommended cleaning procedures.
Vacuum Regularly (no beater bar) - Sweeping or DRY mopping is key to keeping a floor looking good.  A vacuum can also be used. Small stones, mud and gritty dirt tracked in from outside can play havoc on the wood floors finish. To help combat this use long bristle welcome mats placed at all outside entrances for people to wipe their feet on before entering onto the floors. Also, vacuum using a soft bristle brush attachment.

Vacuums with beater bar or power rotary brush head can damage a wood floor and never should be used.

Use the Proper Chair Glides - Narrow wheels, sharp wooden legs or metal furniture legs can scratch and dent hardwood floors. Chairs with rollers can be very hard on hardwood finishes as they tend to attract sand and debris that can scratch the finish. Any furniture that rests directly on top of a hardwood floor should have felt protectors, or furniture coasters under all it's feet. For extremely heavy objects such as a piano, use wide, non-staining rubber cups. Purchasing floor protectors is cheap insurance for protecting your hardwood floor investment. Felt floor protectors used under the legs will help prevent scratches.

Protect from Direct Sunlight - your wood floor may change color or fade due to exposure to direct sunlight. The sun's UV rays accelerates the oxidation and aging of wood so periodically rearranging your furniture and closing the curtains during intense periods of sunlight can help avoid the problem.

Don't Use Oil Soaps - There are many over the counter oil-based soaps and wax based cleaning products that may damage or dull the finish of your wood floor. The best suggestion is to only use the manufacturers recommended cleaning products on your hardwood flooring.

Never Wax a Urethane Wood Finish - If your hardwood floor has a polyurethane finish never use a paste wax on the floor's surface. A paste wax may form a sticky film on your floor and allow tracked in dirt to stick to your wood finish. Polyurethane finishes will not adhere to any wax and adding a fresh coat of polyurethane to your floor will be very difficult.

Trim Pet's Claws - Pet's claws may scratch you floors finish. Regularly trim dog's claws to help reduce scratching your floor's finish.

Protect when moving furniture
- Lift the furniture to move it — avoid dragging. Protect your floor with 1/4" piece of plywood or Masonite when using a dolly for moving furniture or appliances. Never slide or roll heavy furniture or appliances across the floor.

Control humidity levels by use of a dehumidifier or humidifier -  The National Wood Flooring Association recommends maintaining relative humidity range of between 35% - 55%.  Falling above or below this range can result in cupping or gapping.

In case you were wondering ...

Why does my floor make noise?
As a floor expands and contracts due to changing humidity and temperature levels, you may hear small crackling noises.

Why are some edges slightly higher than others?
Wood flooring is milled to certain tolerances established by individual manufactures.  When cutting any natural product, a slight difference is common and is a natural characteristic of hardwood floors.

Why is the color of my wood different under my rug or couch?
Sunshine and some lighting may have an effect on the color of aging wood.   Rugs and furniture in the same place for a long time can cause this change in color.  Some Exotic woods can change more rapidly than traditional wood species.  Moving furniture and rugs will keep your floor well blended.

Ledger Panels

In the universal scheme of things, natural is considered superior to synthetic. Organic foods, soft cotton fabrics, sustainable building materials, and natural stone surfaces continue to grow in popularity because of their health, environmental, and aesthetic benefits. The same holds true for stacked natural stone ledger panels: valued for their inherent warmth, enduring character, and timeless appeal, the premium natural surface is popping up more and more often as kitchen backsplashes, focal-point walls, home facades, and patio partitions. Stacked natural stone ledger panels offer designers, homeowners, and installers many advantages over their faux-stone counterparts. Here's a look at some of those advantages.

Good Value
Though much higher-end in appearance, stacked natural stone ledger panels are similar in cost to synthetic versions. They are designed for quick and easy installation by professional and do-it-yourself installers, which make them an economical choice for numerous applications. The modular panels lock together in puzzle-like fashion to create surfaces that have a seamless appearance, which in turn emphasizes the panels' earthen beginnings and rustic profiles. Unlike synthetic panels, which are often manufactured using environmentally unfavorable processes and materials, stacked natural stone ledger panels are crafted from trimmed pieces of limestone, slate, sandstone, travertine, or quartzite, making them handsome, eco-friendly, and appropriate for living-green designs.

Durable Character
Stacked natural stone ledger panels hold their good looks for much longer than faux polyurethane or plastic-composite panels. After all, real stone has already withstood year’s worth of wear and tear from eroding winds, streaming water, corrosive minerals, and earthen pressure. So, you can be sure that ledger panels crafted from real natural stone will stylishly endure for a lifetime or more when used in interior and exterior installations. They will retain their integrated color and pleasingly rough details through inclement weather, temperature changes, cooking splatters, and vacuum-cleaner dings. Faux-stone panels are more likely to erode and lose their color with time, which makes natural stone ledger panels the more durable surface selection.

Versatile Performer
Touch natural stone and you'll immediately realize it's the real thing (and not formed by man!). Authentic stacked natural stone ledger panels feel good and bring warming textures, a touch of drama, and look-at-me surfaces to interior and outdoor spaces. Available in an array of colors and color combinations, these versatile pieces take on starring roles in styles ranging from classic to contemporary. Beige-shaded stone panels promote a sense of laidback serenity that works well in modern indoor and outdoor living spaces. Bluish-gray hues perfectly partner with dark wood finishes in transitional quarters. Brown and copper shades take the chill off bathrooms, kitchens, and patios furnished with white or stainless steel fittings. Whether used to upholster a wall or face an outdoor fireplace, stacked natural stone ledger panels bring stylish silhouettes to spaces of all sizes and styles.

When all is said and done, stacked natural stone ledger panels are a much better choice than manufactured because they are the real deal. Compare the genuine and faux panel types, visually and by touching, and you'll appreciate the fact that natural stone panels are one-of-a-kind surfaces that will bring everlasting beauty to your home and landscape.

For more information on everything MSI has to offer, visit our website where you can check out our new Stacked Natural Stone Ledger Panels brochure and also view our handy video on how to install Stacked Natural Stone Ledger Panels. Our trimmed pieces of natural stone uniquely interlock, which allows for streamlined installation and gives a more custom look and seamless appearance. Offered in two styles, they can be used on the façade of a home to enhance the appeal, outside to showcase a barbecue island, on a backsplash to spruce up a kitchen or inside to beautify an interior wall.

Laminate Floors Float, And Look Like…

So what, exactly, is a laminate floor? It's a sandwich where the middle layer is a picture of the pattern. The top layer is a very hard plastic surface and the bottom depends on the manufacturer. The pieces of flooring "click" together with or without the use of glue, which depends on your final product choice.

Because of the way it’s made, laminate floors are also beautiful, rivaling the look of the natural materials they depict. They’re durable, too, with options built to withstand the heaviest traffic. Finally, they are among the most forgiving options when the floor underneath isn’t quite perfect.

Installation of laminate flooring is often easier than other flooring options. Since most don’t glue, the flooring simply “clicks” together is a system that floats above the floor beneath. Many find it a rewarding do-it-yourself project. But you can, of course, count on our crack installation team to click things into place, usually in one day. Best of all, their work is guaranteed.

Want something that looks just like wood? We’ve got laminates that defy the eye. Like ceramic tile? No problem. We have mix of gorgeous patterns, texture, and colors for you to explore. Browse our manufacturers links to start exploring what is available.

Renewable, Sustainable Cork

Natural cork is one of the best choices you can make for barefoot comfort in your kitchen or bath. It’s quiet, warm and “gives” a bit underfoot. That’s because the air inside its cell structure makes the floor buoyant and a great shock absorber. It’s often considered the serious cook’s favorite floor because most find it reduces fatigue when you’re spending long stretches on your feet. It also helps prevent broken dishes, because it absorbs impact. This natural cushioning means that it’s even quiet when pets walk on it!

Cork is a completely natural, renewable resource and it’s available in beautiful colors in solid tiles that are assembled as a floating floor. The new surfacing technology makes it so durable that it's backed by a 15-year warranty.

Durable, Sustainable Bamboo

Did you know that bamboo is actually a grass? That means it grows very quickly, making it one of the most sustainable building materials in the world. Surprisingly, it’s also rated as being harder than many hardwoods - almost double that of red oak! It resists denting from heavy and dropped items.

But bamboo’s hard surface isn’t the only reason that it’s a great choice for your kitchen or bathroom. It’s also highly moisture resistant and wards off stains beautifully. Our manufacturers are so confident of their new finish that they warrant their residential products for 25 years against surface wear.

Teragren is the only bamboo flooring manufacturer that provides a full spectrum of coordinating flooring , stair parts and trim, architectural casings, floor vents, panels, veneer, edge banding and butcher block countertops to help you complete your design.

Vinyl: The Fast, Flexible and Fashionable Solution

No material offers as many options as vinyl. You might say it’s the great imposter, since there are vinyl patterns, colors and textures that mimic nearly any surface imaginable. It combines all of this design flexibility with durability, too. That’s why designers often choose vinyl for high traffic areas where they want to complete a specific design theme or capture a unique aesthetic.

Vinyl can look like wood, slate, ceramic tile or stone, with depth and realism that can fool nearly any eye. And it does all that while being budget friendly, sensible, durable and easy to clean. Want to know the best place to see how good today’s vinyl floors are? Just check out the great warranties!

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages:

  •     Widest variety of quality levels and prices of all flooring choices.
  •     Widest variety of styles, patterns, and colors with ultra realistic wood, tile or stone look-alikes.
  •     Water resistant.
  •     Quiet and comfortable underfoot.
  •     Easy maintenance - Vinyl does not require any elaborate maintenance. Vacuum twice a week, mop twice a month and apply year vinyl dressing twice yearly (schedule it with the time changes in spring and fall).
  •     Easy to replace damaged tiles.
  •     Easy to give your floor a new look.
  •     Warranties of higher end products do cover damage repair. (Check out Armstrong's ToughGuard warranty for example.)

Disadvantages:

  •     Vinyl sheet - Few seams. (Vinyl tile requires more seams.)
  •     Vinyl is tough but not indestructible. Dragging heavy appliances across vinyl floors can cause tearing. Dropping heavy objects can cause dents.
  •     Resilient flooring does fade over time, especially if in a room with bright sunlight. Life expectancy is 15-30 years but that's less than real stone or wood flooring.
  •     Repairing vinyl sheet requires a patch or an entire sheet be replaced which is why some prefer tile over sheeting.

Unlike hardwood and ceramic, these floors do have a life expectancy. Depending on your point of view, this can be a plus or a minus. If, for example, you enjoy changing the look of your home once in awhile, the fact that vinyl floors are relatively easy to change to another design can be a plus. Ceramic flooring is very hard to remove. If you decide to use ceramic looking vinyl, it's much easier to remodel.

Hardwood Floor Types and Terms

Q•Wood™

These floors are meant to live in interesting homes. Create luxurious roomscapes, and provide years of enjoyment to their families.

Aluminum Oxide
Refers to one of the most durable finishes for wood flooring; can only be factory-applied.

Bow
The distortion of lumber in which there is a deviation — in a direction perpendicular to the flat face — from a straight line from end to end of the piece.

Burl
A swirl or twist of the grain of the wood that usually occurs near a knot, but does not contain a knot.

Crowning
A convex or crowned condition or appearance of individual boards with the center of the board higher than the edges.

Cupping
A concave or dished appearance of individual boards with the edges raised above the center.

Delamination
The separation of layers in an engineered board through failure within the adhesive or at the bond between adhesive and wood.

Dimensional Stability
The ability to maintain the original intended dimensions (little or no expansion and contractions) when influenced by humidity swings. Some species are more dimensionally stable than others. In addition, engineered flooring products are substantially more stable than their solid counterparts.

Distressed
A heavy artificial texture in which the floor has been scraped, scratched or gouged to give it a time-worn, antique look.

Edge Treatments
These are techniques manufacturers use to add character to the individual boards. There are three primary edge treatments — beveled (square edges are cut at 45-degree angles), eased (similar to beveled, but less of an indentation) and micro-bevel (a small, less than 1mm 45-degree bevel cut).

Grading
The allowance of natural character marks, such as knots and mineral streaks, in a wood product. There are generally four types of grading — clear (no occurrence of knots and streaks), select (minimal occurrence of knots and streaks), common (full range of natural character) and rustic (full range of natural character and/or voids and holes).

Janka Rating
A unit of measurement used to describe the surface hardness of wood flooring, determined by the amount of force required to drive a .444-inch steel ball half its diameter into the wood product.

Knot
A roughly circular and usually darker imperfection found in wood. Knots naturally form in trees where side branches sprout from the trunk.

Plank
Boards that are about 3-8 inches wide.

Square Edge
A sharp, 90-degree edge cut, most commonly used on unfinished flooring products that will be sanded after installation for uniformity.

Strip
Boards that are narrower than plank flooring.

Urethane (polyurethane)
A clear, elastic, petroleum-based varnish commonly used in conjunction with aluminum oxide in wood finishes.

Wood floors come in 3 basic types of construction:
• 3/4" solid wood floors

  •  unfinished, or pre-finished
  •  installed over wood subfloors
  •  use on, or above ground level
  •  nail, or staple down

• Engineered wood floors

  •  unfinished, or pre-finished
  •  installed over dry concrete slabs, or wood subfloors
  •  use above, on or below ground level
  •  glue-down, staple, or float

• Longstrip, engineered wood floors

  • unfinished, or pre-finished
  • installed over dry concrete slabs, or wood subfloors
  • use above, on or below ground level
  • glue-down, staple,or float

The engineered and longstrip hardwood floors can be installed on any level of the home, including in the basement if moisture isn't present. They can also glued down, floated over, or nailed down to most the subfloors. While the 3/4" solid hardwood floors are generally recommended for above grade installation only, and have to be nailed to the subfloor. Any of these floors can be refinished if they become severely scratched, or dull from normal wear and tear.

    Special Note About Berbers:
Berbers are really big bulky yarns that are either produced in a level loop, or multi-level loop carpet construction. Although many Berbers are made out of olefin fiber, some are made with nylon, or a blend of various carpet fibers.

    Carpet Fibers

    Nylon
This is the most popular synthetic carpet fiber used today. It offers tremendous value, performance, and ease of maintenance. Nylon provides brilliant colors and hides soil and traffic well.

    Olefin
This fiber is also called polypropylene, and is extremely popular in Berbers and level loops. Olefin carpets are highly stain, static, mold, and mildew resistant. They can be used for indoor or outdoor carpets, including outdoor turf. Their resistance to matting and crushing are not as good as a nylon fiber.

    Polyester
Gives excellent color clarity with a soft feel to the carpet. Lacks the durability of a nylon carpet.

    Acrylic
Has a real wool look and appearance. Used mainly in level loops, bath mats, and some velvet carpet styles. Offers good mold and mildew resistance with low static levels.

    Wool
Although somewhat expensive wool still offers great bulk, performance, and an elegant look. Several area rugs are offered in wool.
