General Cork Floor Care Guide
- Wipe Spills Immediately - when accidents happen and some liquid gets spilled on your cork floor, you should use a slightly damp white cloth, or paper towel to immediately clean up and dry the effected area. For more difficult spots, follow the manufacturer's recommended cleaning procedures.
- Sweep or Vacuum Regularly (no beater bar) - Small stones, mud and gritty dirt tracked in from outside can play havoc on the cork floors finish. To help combat this use long bristle welcome mats placed at all outside entrances for people to wipe their feet on before entering onto the floors. Also, vacuum using a soft bristle brush attachment.
Vacuums with beater bar or power rotary brush head can damage a cork floor and never should be used.
- Use the Proper Chair Glides - Narrow wheels, sharp wooden legs or metal furniture legs can scratch and dent cork floors. Any furniture that rests directly on top of a cork floor should have felt protectors, or furniture coasters under all it's feet. For extremely heavy objects such as a piano, use wide, non-staining rubber cups. Purchasing floor protectors is cheap insurance for protecting your cork floor investment. Weight distribution is a key factor in preventing indentation. Dents will recover in time as long as the
cellular structure of the cork has not been broken.
- Protect from Direct Sunlight - your cork floor may yellow when fading. The sun's UV rays accelerates the oxidation and aging of cork so periodically rearranging your furniture and closing the curtains during intense periods of sunlight can help avoid the problem.
- Don't Use Oil Soaps - There are many over the counter oil-based soaps and wax based cleaning products that may damage or dull the finish of your cork floor. The best suggestion is to only use the manufacturers recommended cleaning products on your cork flooring.
- In the kitchen, use a rug in front of the working areas, such as the stove and sink, to prevent local premature wear. Do not use throw rugs with rubber or vinyl backing without checking to determine if they will affect your floor's finish. Some materials in the backing can react with certain floor finishes, discoloring or causing the finish to become dull.
- Never use tape or other adhesive products on this surface.
- Periodically check floor for signs of wear. When visible, recoating becomes necessary to
prevent damages to the cork surface.
- Trim Pet's Claws - Pet's claws may scratch you floors finish. Regularly trim dog's claws to help reduce scratching your floor's finish.
- Protect when moving - Protect your floor with 1/4" piece of plywood or Masonite when using a dolly for moving furniture or appliances. Never slide or roll heavy furniture or appliances across the floor.
